University Degree

Recognition of a University Degree

If an academic degree has already been completed in your home country or any other country except Germany, this degree also qualifies for certain professions and must therefore be examined in the recognition process.

The respective university is responsible for the examination and recognition of your previous study performance. In the case of studies which are concluded with a state examination, the respective “Landesprüfungsamt” (examination office of the respective federal state) are responsible. These have to evaluate the qualification of the applicants with regard to the classification into a German course of study. For further information, please contact the Academic International Office or the Student Registration Office (Studierendensekretariat) of the respective university. The Academic International Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) is also responsible for admission to master and doctoral studies. More information can be found here.

The Confederation's Recognition Act does not regulate foreign university degrees which do not lead to a regulated profession. Graduates of these courses can apply directly to the German labor market. However, in order to have better career opportunities in Germany, you have the opportunity to have your university degree assessed by the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB). More information can be found here.

It is not easy to judge whether recognition is possible in a particular case. In any case, you should make use of the help of competent counseling centers. There is help provided by the staff of the project “To arrive prepared and successfully in Germany”, by the migration counseling centers in Germany and (depending on the profession) even by specialized expert advisory centers.
