University Degree

Who needs recognition of a university degree?

If you want to apply for a residence permit in Germany as a specialist with academic training or an EU Blue Card, you need either a German university degree or a recognised foreign university degree.
If a Master's degree programme or a doctorate is sought, the International Office of the respective university is responsible for the recognition of previous academic achievements.

What is the difference between regulated and non-regulated professions?

Most professions are not regulated. This means that you can actually apply directly on the job market with a completed degree. However, in the case of third-country nationals who require a visa for entry, the determination of the equivalence of the qualification is a mandatory requirement.

In the case of regulated professions, on the other hand, access to and pursuit are subject to certain professional qualifications laid down by law, regulation or administrative provision. Also, the use of a job title here is limited to persons with this qualification. Regulated are e.B medical and therapeutic professions, engineer, architect, teacher, social pedagogue, lawyer or lawyer. In the case of these professions, a recognition procedure is necessary in which, if the qualification is recognised, the licence to practise a profession is also issued. How this procedure works, which places are responsible for it and which documents are required for recognition, is explained in more detail on the next page.

How does the equivalence determination work for non-regulated professions?

For this purpose, both the university and the degree must be listed in the database "anabin" and evaluated accordingly: If the university is rated H+ and the degree is listed as "equivalent", the university degree is comparable to a German one. The result "corresponds to technical college" means that although the course of study is an academic education abroad, it is taught at a vocational school in Germany and is therefore only "partially comparable".
If one of the two criteria is not met, an individual certificate assessment can be applied for at the Central Office for Foreign Education. Here it is checked whether the duration and content of the degree programme corresponds to a reference course of study. A certificate evaluation costs 200€.
